The chapel was named in honor of Our Lady of the Angels of the Portiuncula. In keeping with his special love for the Blessed Virgin, St. Francis was especially fond of that chapel just outside of Assisi. It was there in the design of Divine Providence that he started the Franciscan movement and brought his sojourn on earth to its holy end. According to tradition, Francis obtained for that chapel the famous Portiuncula indulgence, which the Popes confirmed and even have extended to our Queen of Angels Chapel. With so many blessings conferred, the liturgical Feast of Pardon, the Portiuncula, was established on August 2.
The architectural firm of Berners, Schober & Kilp designed the Chapel.
