To celebrate the birth of Jesus, St. Francis recreated the manger scene in a cave in the hills above Greccio, Italy, in December 1223.
Francis wanted in some way to see with his eyes, the inconveniences in which the Babe of Bethlehem found himself; how he was laid in a manger and how he lay on the hay between the ox and the ass.

The real miracle was not, as some people say, that the figure of the infant came to life-but that there Francis first understood the humility of the Incarnation.

Our Greccio Cave invites us also to enter more deeply into this mystery of the divine becoming human.
