St. Francis Woods is now the home for the unique and original stigmata statue of St. Francis of Assisi. “We are very pleased to have such a wonderful addition to our peaceful grounds,” commented Sister M. Sylvianne Matttern who was instrumental in acquiring this one-of-a-kind sculpture.
It is a powerful portrayal by the artist Francis Sedgwick of Francis receiving the stigmata on Mt. LaVerna in Tuscany, Italy, on September 14, 1224. The stigmata recalled for Francis the Lord’s passion and death, and he carried this sacred imprint on his body until his death in 1226.
